Hutchinson on the Yamal LNG production plant in Russian Siberia

In 2017, Zaltex® has been chosen to protect primary beams on three MCHE* modules at the Yamal LNG production plant in Russia. Zaltex®, a composite foam reinforced with mineral fibers, has been created by Hutchinson after three years of development.

Zaltex® is a new material offering cryogenic spillage protection for onshore and offshore structures. It is very stable at cryogenic temperatures, even after several thermal shocks, as well as at high temperatures. It can cover a temperature range from -190°C/-310°F to 1000°C/1832°F and offers low shrinkage under cryogenic conditions.

Hutchinson has worked closely with key players from the Oil and Gas industry, including Total, and joined the ISO 20088 Committee (Determination of the resistance to cryogenic spillage of insulation materials). With our active participation Zaltex® is the material with the best ratio thickness/thermal insulation/mechanical properties to pass the ISO 20088-1 test.

Zaltex® has been patented and Hutchinson can easily tailor it to meet its customers’ technical requirements by adjusting the density (from 150 kg/m3 to 1600 kg/m3) and/or the number of layers. It is also the first CSP product (Cryogenic Spillage Protection) on the market to benefit from a dry installation process, enabling it to be assembled on sites under any weather conditions. The market response to our Zaltex® is very positive and further projects are underway.
